As Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser endeavors to become the District's third multi-term mayor, two campaign issues have clearly been on her mind: local business and sustainability. On December 7 at the D.C. headquarters of Sol Systems, a national solar energy company responsible for developing one of the largest municipal solar projects in the country, over 11MW on top of 34 District buildings, she found a perfect time and place to address both.
The event, co-hosted by Sol Systems along with other local leaders in sustainability, aimed to raise awareness about the efforts among D.C.-based solar organizations while also raising funds for Bowser's re-election campaign. Sol Systems' co-founder and CEO, Yuri Horwitz, introduced the Mayor while underlining the impact of the work she's done for the city now and for the future.
"Hope is a fragile thing. Its light flickers in a wind" said Horwitz, speaking on the plight faced by the green energy industry, "This is why it is so important that this city, led by our mayor, Muriel Bowser, continue to provide a beacon in this country, and to lead in building a city for the 21st century."
Mayor Bowser echoed this sentiment, and went on to praise the efforts made in sustainability by the city's citizens and businesses.
"We all play a role in protecting the environment and building a more sustainable city," said Bowser, who also noted how far local business has come in the last few years to help make D.C. competitive for bids like that of a second headquarters for Amazon, a Sol Systems customer.
Throughout the Mayor's address, her message was clear to those solar industry professionals filling the room: sustainability is vital to the future of the city and the world, and cities must lead the way. Her action plan for D.C .residents began with a simple request, "Vote."
